You’ll likely recognise this vibrant lady from all those entertaining VVtv (Very Vintage TV) episodes on your fave people, brands and events of the vintage-loving scene. Von Vonski has been heavily involved in the pin-up and burlesque scene, as a model and entertainer, throughout the scene’s growth, as well as being the famous face of VVtv.
Von makes the perfect host and interviewer, as her personality fills the screen and she has a real love and passion for all things vintage and vintage-inspired. If you’ve been keeping up to date with the VVtv episodes, you’ll have noticed her hosting duties have been shared with a couple of other sparkling ladies recently, as Von became a proud mum to an adorable bouncing baby Elvis in April. Squee!
Von is, and has always been, a very busy lady, so I feel super lucky to have been able to nab some of her time recently; to find out more about her work in the vintage scene, how she balances life as a new mum, and who in history she would most like to interview….
1) You are a well-known face of the NZ vintage scene, what first sparked your love of vintage?
I think foremost what captures my interest in anything are the stories. There is always a back-story to something that is classified as vintage, whether it be fashion, architecture or even bric-a-brac, and I love researching and imagining what that story might be; what significance the piece had to its original owner. A beautiful vintage object sparks my imagination and keeps me inspired. My love for the fashion side of things, comes directly from the awe I felt as a young girl watching Grease and Dirty Dancing and listening to my Mother’s Elvis Presley records. I’m also a bit of a petrol head and have always loved custom cars and Hot Rods, the desire for my very own chopped 30’s Mercury grows stronger everyday!
2) Who are the 3 most inspirational people to you?
To be honest, I’m inspired by most people I meet. I think everyone has something to teach you if you are willing to listen. My new family inspires me the most at the moment, they make me strive for a better tomorrow and have also broken down barriers I had built up in regards to becoming a Mother so therefore inspiring change within I hadn’t thought possible. Talia from Miss T Pinups has always inspired creativity in me also, she seems to draw big ideas from the deep recesses of my mind and shows me how I can make the ideas tangible. Anyone who is courageous enough to find a way to live outside of society’s ‘box’ always inspires me to realise life isn’t just one-size-fits-all.
3) What is your favourite part of hosting VVtv, and what other roles do you play in its creation?
VVtv has been such a fantastic experience! Again, I’m all about the backstory, so my favourite part of hosting the show is being able to sit down with so many inspiring ladies and gentlemen and find out what makes them tick! I’m also involved in producing the episodes which entails finding people/events to cover, relevant research for the episode, organising the shoot and ensuring all necessary content is captured for posterity.
4) If you could interview anyone in history for a special VVtv episode, who would it be and why?
If the subject needed to be a strong, powerful and feminine lady it would have to be Cleopatra. I don’t believe the Roman propaganda that we read in our history books is accurate. I think old Cleo was a sassy and insightful young woman that harnessed the power of her femininity to attract the might of an empire that would ensure her position for her people. Learning her tricks would be amazing, I’d also love to see her legendary beauty routine up close!
5) How do you balance being a new mum and your involvement in VVtv? Any tips for other creative new mums out there?
To be honest, I am still trying to find my feet with the whole juggling act. As the months go by I’m finding it easier to cope with the lack of sleep and endless exhaustion of energy and in the brief quiet moments I’m seeing ways of doing things differently. I think being consistent with a routine that works for all of us will allow more and more time for my creative pursuits to be indulged once more.
6) Where to from here for Von Vonski?
Right now I’m taking it day by day. I have some writing projects that were put on the back burner when I fell pregnant and I hope I can resurrect some energy back into those ideas to develop for the future. It’s an incubation time for Von Vonski and I’m looking forward to seeing how I can merge my love of everything vintage with my passion for the written word.
I look forward to reading Von’s written projects in the future! In the meantime, we’ll still enjoy catching up with our vibrant VVtv host online, while she incubates her sassy self, to emerge as the next brilliant incarnation of Von Vonski. For now, little Elvis has taken the star entertainer position in Von’s house, soaking up the love and adoration, and winning praise for flashing those dazzling smiles. Just like his mum
