Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls | Devel

While Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls may be a book aimed at the literal young, it is still most definitely a fantastic read for females of all ages!  With beautiful artwork by talented women from all over the world, to wondrous and whimsical stories of trail-blazing girls and women from throughout history, it’s a true pleasure to flick through.

Each heroine is captured in a short, one-page brief of their story, with a taste of their personality and style of getting shit done.  There’s badass pirate babes and queens, there’s triumphant activists and spies, there’s brilliant scientists and doctors, there’s magnificent artists and sports stars… It really is such an inspiring and captivating read!

Some of my favourite stories were of mathematician Ada Lovelace who wrote the first computer program, inventor Ann Makosinski who invited a torch powered by body heat only, the red-headed Irish pirate Grace O’Malley, the freedom fighting Harriet Tubman who freed hundreds of slaves in the US, the young war hero Irena Sendlerowa who saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis, activist Malala Yousafzai who stood up for the education of girls, activist Manal Al-Sharif who stood up for women’s right to drive, and of course our inspirational kiwi gals, suffragette Kate Sheppard who got women the vote in NZ, and spy and soldier Nancy Wake who helped the French Resistance in their fight against the Nazis.

Such huge stories, delivered in bite-sized amounts to inspire and whet your (and your girls’) appetite for more.  Pick a fave and go find out more about them!

And the book ends on a beautiful note, where there are two blank pages provided for the owner of the book to tell their story and draw their own portrait.  It really inflated my heart to see those two pages.  To have the message sent to the readers of this book, that while the women and girls reflected on all other pages are marvellous and wonderful and special, that you, dear reader, you are just as marvellous and wonderful and special, and your story is worth telling too.

Whether you have little girls of your own, or you’re an aunt or uncle with nieces, or you’re the little girl at heart who needs to hear the songs of successful women, this book is a winner on all counts.  Highly recommended!
