Let’s GET AMONGST this NZ Music Month!!  My personal gig recommendations for the month of May below; pick one or two shows to go to, and I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Head Like A Hole – 25th Anniversary Tour

4 May – 27 May, NZ-wide

“In May of 2017, to mark the 25th anniversary of the release of Head Like a Hole’s debut album “13” Head Like a Hole will embark on an extensive 12 date national tour. The tour will see the band playing this landmark kiwi rock album in its entirety across the country.”

Badtown And Roofdog

12 May, Auckland

Two of Auckland’s most popular ska-punk bands together again.  With special guests.

Skinny Hobos North Island Tour

12 May – 2 June, North Island-wide

“With ‘The Merchant of Tirau’ and ‘Jokers & Fools’ already well set in the Kiwi rock consciousness, Skinny Hobos promise to bring another whirlwind set of heavy hitting riffs and foot stomping beats to keep you grooving all night long, with some new tunes sprinkled in amongst the classics.”

Battlecat, The Carradines, Dead Simple, Liberated Squid

13 May, Tauranga

“An afternoon of alternative and punk rock in association with The Jam Factory and The Incubator. Entry is only $5 or a donation of non-perishable food for the Tauranga food bank or both.”

Luke Yeoward – Ghosts Album Release

20 May, Auckland

“Inspired by the likes of Joe Strummer, Chuck Berry and Bruce Springsteen, Yeoward’s debut album opens with the fitting title track and serves as an explosive return for the Australian rock heavyweight. A tender, Dylan-esque organ softens the rampant guitar riffs and crashing drum rhythm while Luke’s nostalgic, signature tone steers the track into full force. Described by Luke as “a positive kick up the arse”, “Ghosts” lays the foundation for the rest of the album.”

Tami Neilson – Song of Sinners Tour

25 May – 18 June, NZ-wide

“‘Songs of Sinners’ is a journey through soul, country, gospel and blues and how it all became rock and roll, as Tami sings the songs of the musicians that were there as it happened – Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Howlin’ Wolf, Mavis Staples, Blind Willie Johnson, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and many, many more.”

Sal Valentine & The Babyshakes – Church EP Release

27 May, Wellington

“Widely regarded as one of the finest acts in the country, Sal Valentine and The Babyshakes are a ten piece ensemble dedicated to the performance of their lead singer’s originally-penned rhythm and soul repertoire.  Essentially the AC/DC of jazz, the band sets the bar for thrilling, inspired live performance.”
