Tami Neilson is one talented lady, and will be no longer kept a beloved NZ secret as international publications like The Guardian start taking notice of not only her soulful voice, but also of the growing mountain of awards and accolades she has been receiving both on-shore and off.

Congrats Tami, you have had one stellar year!

And on top of all that, she is one super sweet, fun chica with a great sense of humour.  We had a blast shooting her brand new custom Dress in not only the modern and expansive Aotea Centre, but also in the grand and historical Town Hall.  A famous and gorgeous face like Tami’s is almost like an All-Access pass to anywhere you want to go!

Now let me tell you about The Tami Dress!

I contacted Tami with the idea that we would create something a little country, a little rockabilly, and maybe a little festive for this December collab project.  Red and White would be the festive palette for the garment.  Tami was ecstatic!  She had been searching for a red and white country-flavoured dress for ages (think Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn), but had been coming up short.

And this is where custom-designed garments really come into their own.  Have you also been on the hunt for that little something special, but the racks and racks of clothing out there in the malls and on the street don’t seem to offer quite what you’re looking for?  Me too!  And that’s why I much prefer to custom-make the majority of my own wardrobe, and why I LOVE doing the same for others.  Nothing quite beats the fit and personality of something custom-made.  It’s such a feel-good moment when you step out looking THAT darn good!

Back to Tami’s dress.  I sketched up a few different designs and shapes, and we settled on a sweetheart neckline with full skirt.  Tami had seen The Maloney Shirt from last month, and LOVED the initials and appliqué work on the back, and I was more than happy to personalise her dress in the same way.  Drawing inspiration from the epic dresses worn by Patsy and Loretta, I designed a horseshoe appliqué and Western-rope style initials for the front of the skirt.  A fun design feature to play with while swirling and twirling.

The dress details also include a faux button-stand with shiny red buttons, white Western yokes front and back, a deep-v back, a wide white hem, wide belt-loops, and a whole lot of white piping outlining and adding dimension to all the design details.

The shape, the colours and the design details come together to create one fun and gorgeous modern-vintage, country-flavoured dress!  And being made in cotton, it’s perfect for these hot, rainy, sunny, humid, changeable summer days.

If you or a Rockabilly Babe that you know would like your own Tami Dress (NZ$339), then don’t hesitate to get in contact, and we can get started on your custom country garment!  And like with The Maloney Shirt, your Tami Dress will be personalised with the initials of your choice.
